An extremely simplistic approach to a complicated subject: Taxes. And a topic that's hard to illustrate in the first place. I wanted to have a bit of fun with it as well as introduce a bit of humor to the whole thing. So I thought 'the evolution of the tax-season pencil' would work just fine. I had staff photographer Grant Blankenship shoot the pencil – first intact, then bit, then broken and finally Band-Aided – and that was pretty much it. With such strong visuals, all I aimed for was a few witty words that played on the visuals and a few refers at the bottom. The use of red was a simple way to introduce readers to the different areas of the section and whatnot. And that was pretty much it. - Napo Monasterio
