More Ado About Orlando

OK, here’s a passel of additional before-and-after Orlando prototype pages for the upcoming redesign, again thanks to Bo Burton. More pages after the jump.

Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is wildly popular with readers once they get used to it. Reminds me a lot of European papers. I guess we'll find out in a week or so...

It's really not that bad. Different, yes. But not necessarily bad.

I agree Will. It reminds me a lot of European papers as well. I can dig it.

I like what they're doing with the editorial page. Really making it come alive with visuals and some hints about what these big grey boxes of type are.

Are they going to editorialize on animals everyday though? now that's an innovative idea. Fur and Feathers are the new laurel and darts.

The inside pages are great, but the covers could flow better. The pieces seem thrown on the page. Once they get used to it, I suspect it'll be a good look.

Not that I don't like the look, but I disagree with the sentiment that it looks European. This looks very American -- look at the KC Star at the San Jose Mercury News' recent rethink. Color-coding, more color in general, more cutouts, smaller story count on covers, and an overall more webpage-like look.
Once American papers start treating text like art and developing a sturdy, almost unbreakable grid, then I'll say they're getting more European.

The mastheads on these redesigns are much more eye-popping with the color choice and typeface used. I really enjoy the stronger colors compared to the more pastel ones in the old designs. Organization and negative space are being used much much better too. I'd be interested to hear your comments on my recent blog post on newspaper ad design
