LA Observed notes today that over the weekend the LA Times has scaled back some of the front-page typography that was changed last fall, apparently eliminating the Titling Gothic Compressed and some of the stacked decks. He also says Times editor Jim O'Shea was seen escorting around Tony Majeri, design legend and former Chicago Tribune senior editor for innovation a couple weeks back.
Holy crap, those are the exact parts I hated and talked about on VizEds. I'm going to pretend I made a difference even though there's not a remote possibility.

Posted by: Mike Higdon at March 26, 2007 7:22 PMI've no doubt that, now that the horrible blemish that was Titling Gothic Compressed has been removed from the hallowed front page, readers will return in droves.
Posted by: Josh Awtry at March 27, 2007 10:13 PMThe stacked decks were lame and Titling Gothic Comp. is an awful headline face. It's not called "Titling" for nothing. So, maybe the front page is back to being dull, but it's no longer cacophonous.
Posted by: Ex-designer at March 28, 2007 12:26 PMI'm happy that the Los Angeles Times went back to a more traditional design. I wish that newspapers with an overpowering and visually unfriendly look would do the same thing. Great job, L.A. Times!!
