Thanks to the good folks at the Merc, here's their coverage today of the purchase of the paper by MediaNews. You'll note that Page One riffs off the March page when McClatchy put the Merc on the block. To download a 4-page PDF of these pages, click here.
Ha! I really like the Medianews logo tacked on the bottom of the mock page.
Posted by: Fitz at April 27, 2006 6:02 PMI liked that too. I'm told that was done by Shan "T-Shirt" Carter. I also liked the KR sale page peeking out from under the CP. Excellent work all around (as is usual) in trying conditions.
Posted by: Kenney at April 27, 2006 10:05 PMI find the fact that they switched hands in the new cover from the left to the right to be a subtle little detail that rewards readers who are keeping an eye out. The covers correspond perfectly now.
I don't think a lot of people will notice it, but the fact that they did it is absolutely perfect.
Posted by: Ernie Smith at April 28, 2006 2:04 AMReally cool design and information, but I wonder If readers in the area that read or subscribe to the paper cared. Were there better stories that day that might have meant more to them than the people who work at the paper

We touched on this a bit in the comments to this post about the Merc's coverage when McClatchy put the paper on the block. Readers are very proprietary about "their" newspaper and are probably more interested than you might think. Also, Knight Ridder's HQ is (was) there, which ramps up the interest even more.
