Chris Morris to Vegas

4:19 PM, April 3, 2006

Chris Morris, Presentation Director at The Dallas Morning News, is joining the Las Vegas Sun as Art Director.

Here's Deputy Managing Editor Bill Gaspard's memo to the staff:

Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Chris Morris will join us as Art Director on May 1, responsible for graphics and illustration.

Chris is currently the Presentation Director for The Dallas Morning News. In addition to developing and guiding a formidably talented staff at the DMN, he is well known throughout the industry for his own graphics and illustration work. We've been running some of it in the paper on a freelance basis over the last couple months, most recently the illustrations on the Ideas & Opinion page this past Sunday. You can see other samples at www.morrisca.com.

Chris will bring a lot to the Sun not only through his excellent work but also through his presence in the newsroom. Being a Texan, he's a straight shooter in addition to being a thoughtful journalist. You will find him incredibly helpful, resourceful and a constant source of ideas.

Chris has also worked at the Dallas Times Herald and the San Francisco Examiner. He attended East Texas University.

Please join me in welcoming Chris and his family to Las Vegas and the Sun.

Bill

Vegas is the new Atlanta, which was the new Florida. Who's going to be the new Vegas?

Congrats Chris and Bill!

So, what exactly is going on in Vegas? The Sun is an insert to the Review-Journal. How is it they hire away someone with such an impressive title from an actual newspaper? I'd love to be educated about this.

To second Bill and Bryan: Welcome to Vegas, Chris!

The Sun's an actual newspaper -- scrappy as hell, from what I've read, and unafraid to do journalism that actually matters. One of the few out there with an actual voice. Kudos to Chris -- a pretty awesome guy, all told.
