Savannah
The Savannah Morning News (Morris Communications, 52,422 daily) introduced a redesign Monday. Designers Josh Jackson and Francie Krantz came through with pages. Francie also posted some details here.

The typography is Caslon FB, Relay, Miller for body copy and Big Caslon for section flags.

Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

Did the Accent section go to a tab 'magazine'? It's what we do now here in Dallas with lifestyle content. I just wasn't sure if I was looking at a tab or just the top two thirds of a page.

Yes, it is a tab every day. On Thursdays, it is called Diversions.

last sunday they put out a really great pull-out guide to the redesign. very good-looking and very helpful!

Call me crazy, but I like the old one better.

I can see where the previous post might be coming from. The old design had a few quirks about it that immediately identified it as Savannah that I feel are lost in the new version (based on my in-depth analysis of these six 2x3" jpegs). That said, I don't know if those quirks were good things. So is it better to improve the product, but blend in more with other publications or have quirks that help your paper stand out in a crowd but hinder the overall design?

I also prefer the older one. I loved the promos (you call them promos, right?), and I think that the clovers were cleaner. For me, there are too many small elements in the new covers.

Count me as a liker of the old design better. Except the front page-- I like the pop-to-the-top nature.

Posted by: DXO at March 10, 2006 4:03 PM

Agreed. The older version was much more reader friendly. I prefer just about everything about the old front page. I'd be very interested to hear the public reaction.

Posted by: Scott K. at March 10, 2006 6:27 PM

Sorry, guys, but you don't see the paper every day. The old version was not user-friendly at all. In fact, that was our biggest complaint from readers. They could never find what they were looking for. Content moved around all the time. And I don't understand how you could like the old business section better, as it was one page, black and white.

Navigation is the number one goal of this redesign, along with a bigger focus on four groups reader studies showed us we were missing: women, african-americans, communities outside Savannah proper and young people.

So for all those who like the old version better, I invite you to take a closer look at both versions, and stay in Savannah longer than a weekend. You'd see our new paper reflects our community MUCH better.

Posted by: Francie at March 10, 2006 7:13 PM

I'd like to side with the nots Francie and here's why.

While I can't argue about needing to see more than a weekend, I think that but if the pages you posted are indicative of the overall redesign, the old looks much better than the new.

As an example, on the front page comparisons I see a confusing stream of narrow columns throughout the new version vs. a clean and easy to navigate with a dominant photo on the old.

On page 2 I see an old version with colorful maps and a cutout that brings me to the upper left portion of the page. In the new, I see gray text and more text and more text. There's one crappy piece of art pushed wayyy to the top. That page is really horrific, to be blunt.

Please keep us up to date, but also respect the opinions of people here. Some like it. Some don't. I do not.

Mike, the inside pages are not old vs. new. They are both examples of new pages. So the page 2 you like is part of the redesign. So is the one you didn't like.

Posted by: Josh Bohling at March 11, 2006 7:24 AM

Wow! Both the pages on the left and right are new? I think the ones on the left are old, and the ones on the right are new.

Posted by: Complex3 Design at March 12, 2006 8:36 AM

The one thing I don't like about the redesign is the rail down the right side of the page. Coming from a newspaper where the rail is supposed to be some trademark of ours, the consensus among the designers is that it is very restrictive for front page design ideas.

Posted by: Newbie at March 12, 2006 3:33 PM

I respect others' opinions, however, this was the first day of the redesign and it takes time to get used to. I hope you won't quickly jump to conclusions based on seeing one set of pages. And yes, the two bottom pages are part of our redesign.

I invite you to continue to view our pages on newspagedesigner and newseum, and come visit Savannah! Thank you for your input.

I was in the Savannah area this past week (Tybee Island) and happened to pick up a few copies of the Morning News -- it really does look good. They really do get that teaser rail to work well, which is arguably difficult. It's not like there's a lacking amout of space on the page.

The tons of small pieces of information were a boon to me, with a lot of smaller summaries and tidbits of information in the folios. The only real complaint I have is with the downplayed art inside, which I guess is difficult when you've got so many smaller stories. I feel like the Morning News has really pulled off a hometown publication that I can (and did) read. Awesome job.

Call me crazy too, but old paper look better, the only change I agree is the section logos, big size and the page have more color pallette, otherwise the old paper look great!!
