It's a Garcia Media job, with Mario Garcia as chief project leader, along with Rodrigo Fino and Paula Ripoll. El Tiempo's art director is Beiman Pinilla.

Garcia redesigned El Tiempo in 1987, retouched it in 1995 and redesigned it again in 2000.

In 2006, El Tiempo introduces a "rethinking" for a newspaper that has become part of a 24/7 news operation, which includes radio, television, magazines, the Internet and, as of last week, news prompts via mobile telephones.

The new El Tiempo introduces a colorful navigator on page one, along with navigational devices thru every section, including those inside Book 1 and Book 2. A color palette consisting of five main earthtone hues is utilized for secondary readings, informational graphics and backgrounds. Scanners and traditional readers will find the new pages of El Tiempo easy to read, and the content easier to find.

The typography: A version of Modern, Nimrod for body copy and various weights of Poynter Gothic Text for sans-serif uses.

Also, Garcia says, "We have created an entire system of 'secondary readings' for breakout elements to expedite reading. These are what I call internal navigators within stories to lead you into bio sketches, side stories, development of a process, chronology of an event, etc."

Here's one of the design manual's pages regarding "secondary readings."

El Tiempo: Colombia's daily goes multi platform

With the launch of a new design and rethinking Feb. 2, El Tiempo, Colombia's largest circulation daily, emerges as a true multi-platform newspaper. One of Latin America's best known newspapers, El Tiempo has always had a reputation as a innovator in technology, along with a journalistic reputation that makes many refer to it as "a deans of Latin American journalism".

For Mario Garcia Sr., this is his third consulting engagement with El Tiempo since 1987, when the newspaper introduced a new printing press with a redesign that included more color, new sections and a new typographic scheme. Other fine tunings took place in 1995 and 2000.

Typographically, El Tiempo uses CEET Modern for headlines, El Tiempo Nimrod for texts and the sans serif is Poynter in various weights.

The Garcia Media team for this project included Mario Garcia Sr. as chief project leader, along with Rodrigo Fino and Paula Ripoll, of the Buenos Aires office. El Tiempo's art director is Beiman Pinilla.
