The Los Angeles Times is launching West Magazine, the replacement for the Sunday Los Angeles Times Magazine, on Feb. 5. Some design details:
The full-color weekly will feature a new typography created exclusively for West and a bold, crisp and clean look — designed by Los Angeles Times Creative Director Joseph Hutchinson — that will significantly improve content flow and pacing. The magazine's distinctive page layout will dramatically showcase eye-catching photography by Los Angeles Times and freelance photographers and illustrations by some of the best artists in the industry. For the cover of West magazine, artist Jim Parkinson, who designed the nameplates for Esquire and Rolling Stone magazines, has created a new, modern nameplate similar to one of the versions used for the original West magazine.
"So I suppose that could look like one of these from 1967 or 1971. Somehow, I'm betting '67."
You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Posted by: rob at January 14, 2006 1:49 PMSorry, it posted too quickly. By that I meant to add, I think Mr. Hutchinson's design and Mr. Parkinson's plate will leave us pleasantly surprised.
I look forward to Februrary.
Posted by: robb at January 14, 2006 1:56 PMWell, best of luck to Joe and the LAT folks.
I do think that it sucks that they took the name West, as it was the name of the Mercury News' sunday magazine up until it closed recently.
Posted by: Steve at January 15, 2006 10:03 AMWell according to the press release the LAT's magazine was called "West" previously, "from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s" -- so they didn't really "take" the name from the Merc News, did they? Unless the Merc's defunct magazine was around pre-60s.
Posted by: peter at January 16, 2006 6:40 AMThere was West, there was New West. West magazine had great airbrushed covers from the most popular commercial artists working (before computer airbrushing). New West, whihc believe Rodger Black designed the logo at some point was a magazine, not a Sunday supplement. I have some West covers somewhere.
Posted by: randy at February 1, 2006 3:35 PMThe original West Magazine from the 1960's was nicely designed- large format, being about the size of the old Life and Look Magazines, but printed on a lighter stock rather than slick paper. I saved quite a few issues, and probably still have them out in my garage (if the vermin and mold haven't gotten to them.) As I recall, most of the issues were only about 32 pages, but it was never very heavy with ads. The Times' other Sunday magazine, Home, was always thicker, but its content was about 3/4 ads. I'm glad that The Times is reviving the old name.
