Had a lovely fall day off yesterday, so here, a day late, are the Monday front pages of the new compact-size Wall Street Journal international editions. Here's Dow Jones' press release and an FAQ about the editions. And here's an International Herald Tribune story about the change. Mario Garcia says some readers have remarked that it's as "easy to carry as my iPod." See? That Nano joke wasn't far off.
I think the pink "WSJ.com" watermark at the top of the page really mucks up the time-honored nameplate.
Posted by: Andy at October 18, 2005 2:36 PMI totally agree with you, Andy. There is a conflict zone on the top between the nameplate, "WSJ.com", and Europe/Asia. Part of this is solved by the beige color background of "What's New". But the one who really suffers is The Wall Street Journal name/brand, as the safety area is killed by the WSJ watermark. I assume the traffic on the wsj site did increase, but is it worth altering this time-honored nameplate?
Posted by: Iulian at October 19, 2005 12:09 AMI've got to agree - that WSJ watermark doesn't work for me at all. Is the next big trend in newspaper design to obscure some part of your flag, as many magazines now do?
Weakens the identity, I think. Look at the new Star Tribune, with a freakin' cartoon ear of corn sprouting dead set in the middle of the flag. A teaser, I'm sure, but how many readers picked up the "new" paper that morning and thought the corn was some new logo?
Posted by: Malcolm at October 19, 2005 7:15 AMi agree... the wsj just looks awkward.
as for the star tribune.. the first thing my boss said when i showed him the new redesign was "is that banana gonna be there everyday?"
Posted by: dusty at October 19, 2005 9:50 AMOne shudders to think had they decided to tease to the Vikings boat cruise story in the flag instead.
