You see Quark's new logo? I'm betting the Scottish Arts Council has.

Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

Interesting, if overly detailed, discussion of Quark's new identity, the thievery issue and the XPress-InDesign wars, here: http://www.underconsideration.com/speakup/archives/002412.html#002412

My favorite of the dozens of comments tries to get into Quark execs' heads:

"Hmm...we're overpriced, have pissed off thousands of users with crappy upgrade policies and lack of any real support, we haven't been innovative in about a decade, Adobe is kicking our ass...hmm...I KNOW...WE NEED A NEW LOGO!"

The real problem with the logo is not that it's a rip-off, but it's that they're supposed to be leading the industry and being innovative and such, but they come up with a retread for their corporate identity. That will not play well with designers. It just confirms to many of us visually that Quark is not at the cutting edge when it comes to design anymore.

There is also a good discussion with other logos that it's derivative of (but of course, none as plainly as the Scottish Arts Council) at http://www.beadesigngroup.com/

SicolaMartin designed the logo, so I don't think its Quark's fault (after all, who knew about the Scottish Arts Council?).

I just wonder if the logo was done in Illustrator. :D:D

"SicolaMartin designed the logo, so I don't think its Quark's fault (after all, who knew about the Scottish Arts Council?)"

Gee, I don't know, maybe at least the 60 million UK residents, a fair proprtion of whom i would dare say are quark license holders. Other than that, why give a shit about the biggest arts funder in Scotland?

Actually, the 'q' that was so meticulously 'designed' by SicolaMartin is actually a single story 'a' from the fountain.nu website, a typeface called 'girl'

The thing is, that logo is so simplistic it would have been used in some form in the past., however Quark have still failed to deliver. We are a small agency that's just bought 3 new versions of 6.5 and the highlighting problems/quits drives me nuts. I would not be annoyed if there really was an alternative. The pick up of indesign is minimal where we are and unfortunately Quark is still the standard.
