Yellow Journalism

11:35 AM, July 25, 2005

Lance Armstrong won his seventh-straight Tour de France yesterday and retired from the sport. And on front pages from Austin to New York to Paris to Reykjavik to Tel Aviv, yellow's the color of the day (except Oslo, as homeboy Thor Hushovd won the green sprinter's jersey). For my fellow bike geeks, here are some pages.

Lance,
After my recovery from testicular cancer in 1999, you were my inspiration to get on a bike and ride myself back into shape. Thanks for the inspiration over the years and for the ride.

What a champion, he'll be greatly missed by those in the profession and by fans alike. Enjoy you're retirement Lance you have earned it. Most of all enjoy watching your children grow up. 7 tours wins will seem easy compared to bringing up children.

Posted by: Mark at July 27, 2005 3:07 PM

What else can be said? You are a true champion and a personal inspiration for me and my family. It is about time that this country had a true role model and person of such spirit and determination. The TDF will never be the same!!

Great idea,
It's amazing to see the coverage that the world media now provides for the greatest athelete of our time (and possibly all time). Lance has not only taken cycling to a greater audience, but he has established a solid foundation to continue the LAF message. Best of luck in all you do with your life.
God speed LA, and thanks for the memories!!!

Lance te admiro por tu tesón, por tu fuerza de voluntad y por tu humildad, por eso eres 7 veces campeón. Soy tu fan nro 1.

Posted by: Mariela at July 27, 2005 5:31 PM

Lance- they should have your name in the dictionary as "LANCE: accomplishing the miraculous. To continue against all odds and succeed. To give meaning and definition to life, itself."
I had a severe head injury years back. And although I went back to college to get a degree in journalism, I did little with it until I decided to devote 5 months to becoming a full-fledged afficionado of the Tour de France. I interviewed your buddy, Dave Lettieri, and because I had to wait around to speak with him, I got 2 parking tickets. The story didn't get printed but it was mostly because I'd only submitted it to one local newspaper, who felt I should have given more attention to our local bike shop owner, Lettieri. Even so, I felt in a way, that I, too, had accomplished something of what I set out to do- if only to try and know about as much as Bob Rolle about the beloved TDF.

"Grabe ka Lance! Buti na lang nagretire ka na, kasi pag kasali ka ulit sa mga susunod na taon, wala nang iba pang mananalo kundi ikaw pa rin. Buti na lang pinagbigyan mo ang iba! Talagang saludo ako sa yo!" (this is in Filipino)

(You really are great, Lance! It's good you retire or else, it will be your face again in the next coming years in the headlines of international papers! We salute you, Lance!

Lance has inspired many millions, myself included, by being even more than a cycling champion, more than a cancer survivor, but also a great human being. In a generation where so many heroes have been torn down, Lance stands tall as a superb inspiration and role model who we'll be telling our children and grandchildren about. Live Strong, Lance, and everyone!

Mellow Johny
Cycling in my perspective will never be the same, I feel like i lost a leg during climbs. I feel like I lost my left lung during sprints. I feel like one of my heart valves is clog. Lactic acid doesn't get buffered as quick as it use to be. Tour de france in will nevr be the same. Team discovery will never be the same. Reading Chris carmichael article will never be the same. Johan Aura of encouragement will nevr be the same. Time will pass somehow.
Farewell .....

Posted by: Renzie at July 28, 2005 10:41 AM

Dear Lance,
I followed you on every race you attended in France this year and have now several photos of us toghether which I will keep for ever.
Your example gave me the strength to alter the course of life when I was on the edge of the abyss for it showed me that nothing is impossible if you can overcome pain and have the will, the strength of mind, and the desire to pull through. You helped me to transform the negative aspect of this dreaded disease into positive energy; you gave me courage and taught me how to surpass myself. For, each Tour de France race you won, each birthday you celebrated was a message of hope you sent around the world to thousands of sick people struggling alone with their pain.
If I am cured from cancer today I owe it to you.
Farewell and thank you Lance. Enjoy retirement from cycling with Sheryl and the kids.

I hadn't realized that Armstrong was going to take up news design in his retirement and that commenting newsdesigner.com would be the most efficient way to contact him. Who knew!?

Posted by: Luke at July 28, 2005 3:33 PM

Great win. Can't wait till Floyd's book comes out and we can learn more about how you achieved the wins. Maybe soon you can take the whole team to dead mans hole...I hear Eki really liked the place.

Posted by: Jim at July 28, 2005 7:44 PM

I first met you back in October 1995 at the Rocky Hill duathlon in Smithville, TX, and have been a fan since the early 90's. All I can say is that I have looked forward to every July over the last seven years with such anticipation and joy. I find myself still turning on OLN every night hoping to see something other than the BBQ cookoffs. It has been a true pleasure watching you ride.

I have lost two grand parents and several family friends to cancer over the years and it seems like this disease is everywhere. However, given these tragedies, your LIVESTRONG campaign/mantra hit me at a time when I was going through some personal difficulties outside of cancer. That is why, since May of 2004, when I bought my first LIVESTRONG bands at 360 CycleWorks and at the old WholeFoods at 6th and Lamar, Yellow will never leave my right arm. It is just a simple, yet powerful reminder of what life is really about and the horrible difficulties and obstacles that people endure and overcome.

Given the events in your life over the last 9 years, I fully believe you have been put here to serve a higher purpose. I feel we are going to see that unfold in the near future. Good luck and LIVESTRONG!!!!

Posted by: Michelle at July 29, 2005 6:08 AM

This is really an interesting phenomenon. Where on earth are people getting the idea that they are writing to Lance here? And if they are this confused by a simple blog entry, how bumfuzzled are they when they pick up a daily newspaper? Must we consider their comprehension skills in our design?

Posted by: Luke at July 29, 2005 8:18 AM

They don't get this site is not for Lance like most Americans don't get the sport of cycling. I did hear that Lance gets messages on his blueberry every time it finds a story with his name in it. So maybe he has read this. Actually, hopefully he has given that up now that he is on retirement.

But back to the topic at hand, I think most of the media coverage missed the chance to showcase how Americans had one of the best tours ever. There were many accomplishments by Americans other than Lance in this tour. I hope each of those guys hometown papers paid tribute to them too.

That said, I like the photo on the NY times cover the best. Because it shows all the guys and it is an accomplishment just to finish. Looks like an army returning from battle. I just wish it was bigger.

Posted by: George at July 29, 2005 8:40 AM

Very nice collection of front pages that you have there. Where did you get all of the images from?

Posted by: Scott Johnson at July 29, 2005 9:58 AM

Luke, they're getting that idea because this site is linked off the front page of thepaceline.com right now. Since the paceline doesn't seem to have any way to leave a note there, some people are leaving one here. I would hope most of us realize Lance isn't likely to see the messages.

Come on Lance, I bet you'd win 7 terms in Washington too!

Posted by: B Crain at July 30, 2005 12:46 PM

lance has shown us how to rise after a fall. his story is not all about his 7 tdf wins. he has also his share of downfalls.like all of us, lance hoped and worked for the better after every defeat.

thanks lance for the inspiration. we will miss seeing dance up the Alps and pyrenees!

What a great tribute! THANK YOU LANCE for providing cancer patients, cyclists, cycling fans and people facing challenges everywhere with a remarkable story of courage, determination, and human spirit that proves that we are, as you have said, capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for. The world has a new hero.
