A closer look here at the new Denver Post, slated to appear Tuesday. Also, they'll have a live chat Tuesday with Damon Cain, the Post's ME for Presentation and Design. Be kind to him. He'll probably be working on zero sleep and about three venti double-shot lattes.

Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

"The Denver Post wanted to make the newspaper more user-friendly, easier to read, and better organized. Goals of the redesign:
- More contemporary front page
- Cleaner layout throughout the newspaper
- Increased use of visual guides for readers.
- Updated photos of columnists
- New features"

Isn't that true of their last redesign? It seems those are the words used for every newspaper redesign. Eventually someone will make the paper so clean it will be blank.

And I love their answer to the question: "Am I getting less news?"

"The image area of the newspaper is narrower, but the page size has remained the same. The Denver Post design team has gone to great lengths to ensure a minimal amount of news loss."

So, uh, Yes.

And I can't believe they dropped Evansville, Indiana from the weather report! I also noticed they removed Istanbul, but not Constantinople. I'm sure they'll get letters for that.

Well, as long as they left the comics alone I doubt many will notice the changes.

(What is the new typeface?)

Good points, Chuck. Those "Guide to the redesign" thingies are often a bit of an exercise in spin.

"I also noticed they removed Istanbul, but not Constantinople."

That's nobody's business but the Turks!

RE: NEW DENVER POST

Yeah, why they changed it I can't say. I guess people just liked it better that way.

Quick. Name the illustrator TMBG employed for the 'Istanbul' video.

Hint: It's someone I used to hire for freelance illos when I was an art director for the paper on the other side of Michigan Avenue . . .

Mark Marek?

Hmm. I thought it was Tom Bachtel. I know he animated one of their videos - proably 'Birdhouse in your Soul.' Oh well, never mind. I'm going to watch the 'Direct From Brooklyn' DVD tonight and find out.

J. Otto Seibold, no? Who did "Olive, The Other Reindeer," etc.?

Posted by: newsdesigner at May 4, 2004 9:11 PM

TMBG did a video for "Istanbul"? When I hear the song all I can see is the Tiny Toons video.

Posted by: Chuck Welch at May 5, 2004 7:07 PM

Yeah, Tiny Toons Adventures is my original point of reference for this song as well.
