FALLUJAH POLL

3:47 PM, April 13, 2004

Poynter today has an article about the APME National Credibility Roundtables Project, which sponsored a survey after the Fallujah photos ran. Twenty-nine news organizations across the country e-mailed 13,642 readers beginning Friday, April 2.

They asked about a particular photo, which showed Iraqis cheering as the burned, mutilated bodies of two Americans hung from a bridge.

By the following Thursday, 2,009 readers had responded. Of these, 58 percent approved of the image being published in a newspaper or on a website; 39 percent objected to using the picture.

Interesting!

Update: In the comments, reader Chuck Welch notes that he was one of the surveyed readers and reproduces part of the survey. He also says:

The questions were the expected ones (all paraphrased): Would you have run the picture and why or why not and where? Would you have given your reasons for showing or not showing the photo. What about children seeing the photos? What if the faces were visible? Would it matter if the bodies had been soldiers or civilians?
I suppose this wasn't a scientific survey, but I'd sure like to see more specific numbers. For instance, how many were in favor of the photo running on the inside, but not on A1? Or how many would change their opinion if the victims had been soldiers?

Also, APME now has a story on their site. It's nearly identical to the Poynter article, but they also have a bunch more quotes from readers here, and a page of links to the stories participating newspapers ran on the survey.

Comments
Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

I was one of the 2009 who answered. (Strangely enough I received my email a couple of hours after commenting here on the subject.) I'm sure the other 13000-plus are like me -- people who volunteered to answer such questions when requested by their local newspaper.

Here is the first two paragraphs of the email I received:

In recent days, you might have seen gruesome photographic images emerging from Fallujah, Iraq. They've presented media outlets with some
tough choices: first, whether to use the images at all, and if so, which images to use and how to use them. Newsrooms across the country debated
those questions, and their conclusions varied widely.

But today we want you to be the editor, and share with us your thoughts on news judgment and journalism values. We'd like you to view one of the graphic images and tell us how it should or should not be used.

The questions were the expected ones (all paraphrased): Would you have run the picture and why or why not and where? Would you have given your reasons for showing or not showing the photo. What about children seeing the photos? What if the faces were visible? Would it matter if the bodies had been soldiers or civilians?

"here is"?

Obviously I'm not a copy editor.

Hey, thanks for the inside scoop, Chuck!

I'm the producer who set up the survey for APME (my boss here at spokesmanreview.com is the online guy on their board, and it was his idea to run the survey). I've been intending to post something about the results on my blog, but haven't gotten aroudn to it. I'll try to do something shortly, and I should be able to resurrect the form as it appeared if you're interested in the wording of the questions. Or at least a screenshot -- I don't want anyone to start filling it out just to find out that the polls already closed ... :)

BTW, I'm not sure how much breakdown they did on the numbers, so answers to a couple of the questions you ask might not be readily available.

Here you go.

Dude! You rock!

Heh. Thanks :)

I just updated that post, and I'll pass along the link here too: Here's a list of localized stories by newspapers that participated in the survey.

BTW, your blog is really, really good stuff. Came across it not too long ago via a link at wholelottanothing. I used to be a page designer, too, and I've been enjoying the read here. Passed your blog along to some current designers at my paper as well.
