"WE GOTTA PLAY 'EM ONE DAY AT A TIME"

They're so breathless about their new opening over at the St. Pete Times that they've been taking Crash Davis sports cliché lessons.

Job description: Ready for the big show at the St. Petersburg Times?

Our major league sports desk seeks an impact player who has speed, tenacity, an abundance of confidence and the skills to back it up. We're looking for the whole package: an excellent copy editor who writes awesome headlines and has superior design skills.

In return, we'll give you the team structure and opportunity to take your game to a whole new level. You'll work with excellent writers, outstanding photographers and an energetic graphics department as we cover the Bucs, Devil Rays, Lightning, PGA golf, NASCAR, the state's major football programs, prep sports and everything in between.

Do you have it in you? Can you compete for a job at one of the country's top newspapers?

Jeez. I know it's the Sports section, but maybe next time you could just pick one cliché and let it go at that.

Heads up: After you hit "post" things may be slow and you may get an error. Most likely, your comment did post. Apologies. I'm looking for a fix.

I don't know who writes their ads for designers but they should be replaced with someone with a journalism background -- somebody with a built-in bullshit detector might be less apt to put it in the help-wanted ads.

Yes. It certainly has the stink of Human Resources about it.
